The annual recreational day of the Bioscientific society of Oulu was held on 17th June. This year we went paintballing. The game zone was located in Kiiminki where the Oulu Action Park personnel started the day with instructions. After being dressed in paintball clothing and masks the heart-bumping games started. Two teams ran, crawled, hid themselves, laughed and had fun in the woods when battling to win. Sun was shining all day long so the weather could not have been better. After the games we had refreshing picnic with snacks and “nokipannukahvi” in a nearby campfire next to the beautiful Kiiminki riverside. The day did not lack excitement or enjoyment! Let’s see what fun we will figure out for the next recreational day.
In May the Bioscientific Society of Oulu had its annual company visit. This year the society visited the premises of Nordlab, home of one of the highest quality and amount clinical services and biochemical analysis. In just the Oulu University hospital Nordlab has up to 40 doctors and 250 technicians running several different laboratories: the chemical, emergency, microbiology and genetic labs.
In the emergency and chemical labs, our members witnessed the fully automatized analysis center. Tubes come autonomously from the hospital straight to the state-of-the-art analysis machines provided by Siemens and undergo their journey until the results are sent back to the health professionals. Services range from basic blood count to a complex biochemical analysis such as HPLC, LC-MS/MS, chromatography, immunochemistry analysis and many other personalized measurements.
The visit was concluded with a tour in the genetics lab, in which the inherited diseases in Finland are being studied with the latest molecular biology techniques, such as Sanger sequencing with the use of the 3500DX genetic analyzer and basic karyotyping.
Overall, the visit proved itself to be useful and interesting for our members, of whom many are also customers of Nordlab, utilizing their services when analyzing various disease models in mice.
NSMB – Natural Science Meets Business, a new exhibition event for natural scientists was organized for the first time on Tuesday 14th of November in the Linnanmaa Campus of the University of Oulu. The idea of the event was to unite natural science professionals and students from academia and companies. In particular, the NSMB event sought to bring together the academic knowledge and the companies, and to encourage students to contact the companies to facilitate their integration into the working life.
The event started with an introduction to the study program of Industrial Engineering and Management by docent Jukka Majava, and several specialized lectures and workshops on working life skills were given at the Tellus Ice Breaker Stage and lecture hall L2 during the day. These included workshops on LinkedIn and Productization & product development, as well as lectures with topics varying from science communication skills to product marketing. The day ended with the talk “So you think you can think?” by science blogger Pauli Ohukainen encouraging listeners to engage in healthy critical thinking.
Around 30 company stands representing various disciplines of natural sciences were also present in the Väylä hallway during the day, and the visitors were encouraged to contact company representatives and to listen to company presentations and interviews by Jaani Mustonen in between the lectures.
The Biochemical Society of Oulu organized NSMB together with LuOpiO, the Oulu student branch of the Union of Professionals in Natural, Environmental and Forestry Sciences (Loimu). The partners and sponsors of the NSMB2017 event were Loimu, the BioBio Society, University of Oulu, the Faculty of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine and the Health and Biosciences Doctoral Program (HBS-DP)
The Biochemical Society of Oulu participated in European Biotech Week (25.9 – 1.10.2017) by organizing Bioquiz-event together with Histoni and Syntaksis. Event took place in restaurant Tuba on 28th of September.
In bioquiz, attendants competed for prize in groups of four people by answering biotech-related questions spanning from basic molecular biology to Nobel laureates. Competition was tight between the 19 registered teams, and after few hours, the winners were awarded European Biotech Week merchandise and gift cards to restaurant Tuba. Overall, the event was succesfull in bringing together bioscientists and students!
The Biochemical society of Oulu organized an annual recreation day on July 1. This year we headed stand-up paddling (SUP) and coupled that with a picnic at Kiikeli. For once, the weather did not let us down, since it was one of the prettiest days of summer. The sun was shining from the clear blue sky and weather was perfect for outdoor activity and picnic.
First, we gathered at Kiikeli to hear instructions for paddle boarding by Leijakoulu Lappis instructor.
After nice but also exhausting a bit over two hours SUP trip the picnic was very welcome. The group headed to the Kiikelinranta where one of the board members had brought all the ingredients for an enjoyable picnic. Rest of the afternoon we spent enjoying the rare warmness and sunshine of Finnish summer with good food, drinks and company.
The Biochemical Society of Oulu arranged a company visit to its members 2nd of June. We visited OYS TestLab and ValiRX. Both organizations are located in Kontinkangas and are 10 minutes walking distance apart.
OYS TestLab, located in Oulu University Hospital, offers frameworks for collaboration between private and public sectors. In OYS TestLab, health technology companies can test their products in realistic environment and get feedback from health care professionals.
